As a sign of the strengthening friendship and unity between the
countries of Europe, the Russian government decided to build a
Europe square in the Russian capital in 2000. The studio of Youri
Platonov conceived the architectural project.
L’Enlèvement d’Europe
was originally made in bronze and exhibited in the gardens of
the Van Buuren Museum in Brussels in the year 2000. Transformed
into stainless steel, the sculpture was offered to the city of
Moscow by the authorities of the Brussels Region.
The peculiarity of the artwork lies in the resemblance between
the horn of a bull and the body of a woman. The sculpture is 15
meters long, 13 meters high and weighs around 16 tons.
The square and the sculpture were solemnly inaugurated in the
framework of the "Brussels days" in Moscow on September
15, 2002.
